Using AI to interpret an iconic rock ballad

Bye-bye Miss American Pie.

There’s a chance that I might be the first. The first person in the world to use AI to interpret American Pie, Don MacLean’s sprawling, iconic rock ballad. Seriously, has anyone else fed the 8-minute and 40-something second song into AI, stanza by stanza and in some cases line by line?

But why? Mostly because I wanted to see how Midjourney’s AI would handle a song that is filled with allusions and obscure references? And what if generated all 27 images in the style of Banksy? I write about this exercise on my Substack newsletter.

A couple of the images are below, but you can see all them here.

“"I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride + But something touched me deep inside The day the music died + in the style of banksy"

“"And while Lenin read a book of Marx The Quartet practiced in the park + in the style of banksy"

“"So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick + Jack Flash sat on a candlestick + 'Cause fire is the devil's only friend + in the style of banksy"“

All images were generated by Joe Newman using the Midjourney platform. You can also follow along on Instagram at @most_sublime_media. Get fresh content delivered to your inbox by subscribing to my Substack newsletter.
